hospitality. The Nantou City Guest House is an eleven-room hotel set directly in the heart of Shenzhen, China’s technology hub often referred to as the Eastern Silicon Valley. In designing the space, Shanghai-based architects Neri&Hu were inspired by the city’s unique urban fabric, which they described as a modern metropolis peppered with pre-industrial settlements and “tightly knit alleys, plazas, and dead-ends, where residents, street vendors, unsupervised children, nomads alike roam.”
The hotel’s interior channels a similarly industrial aesthetic. Characterised by bare concrete surfaces, black iron stairwells and wide floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the cityscape, Neri&Hu opted to furnish the hotel rooms with sophisticated modern furniture. Mid-century-inspired wooden sofas, low brass tables and Scandinavian-style blond wooden seating balance out the concrete and metal. In the bathrooms, the architects introduced a shock of jewel-tone colour in the form of glossy green tiles that beautifully contrast the deep Immersion soaker tub, which Neri&Hu custom designed for Agape.
