hospitality. The Hotel Weisses Kreuz is a luxury hotel and spa in the pristine mountainous region of Bolzano, Italy that prides itself on its rich architectural history. The hotel comprises three separate buildings: two repurposed historic structures from the 13th and 19th centuries made in the traditional South Tyrol style, and a modern building defined by clean lines and alpine coziness. “The project is located in the center of Burgusio in the upper Val Venosta, which is characterized by mainly agricultural buildings and narrow alleys,” explain the architects, whose main challenge in designing the hotel was integrating the buildings into the existing context, with a goal of creating a compound that would feel like a village within a village.

“Since the hotel is part of the historic center, it was important to preserve the local reference and celebrate this dialogue between history and contemporaneity,” the architects describe of the design. “A particular challenge was to emphasize the historic features and artistic beauty of the old rooms while adapting them to a modern standard of well-being and presenting these ancient walls and rooms in a stylish way.”

In doing so, the designers chose finishings and furniture that would highlight the dialog between past and present. “The Agape products chosen seem to have been specially designed for these rooms,” explain the architects, who chose the amorphous-shaped Marcio Kogan-designed DR tub for the modern rooms and Patricia Urquiola’s Vieques to blend in with the more ancient buildings. “They give a touch of modernity without competing with the historic architecture.”
